On June 8th, 2000 our adoption of Marlana and Melissa was finalized. It had been a long road of waiting but our attorney finally told the state that we were moving out of state in the middle of June and things needed to be finished. So we had a private meeting with the judge to have everything finalized. Once everything was finalized we moved to Elizabethton to start a new life. Marlana was going into the 8th grade and Melissa was going into 6th. They easily fit in and started to grow into beautiful young ladies.
During Marlana's 8th grade year she had lots of nose bleeds and had her nose broken twice playing basketball so after some test we found out that both Marlana and Melissa have VonWilebrand disease which is a form of hemophilia. When the girls came to us we had no medical information and actually had to hunt for shot records even. Unfortunately this is a part of adopting a child - most of the time you are given no previous information about the child. This also fell true for Melissa with being mentally challenged and no one knowing it so therefore she had not been getting the help she needed. Joey and I became great advocates to fight for Melissa and get all the help she needed which paid off as time went by. Having no information meant each day something new could pop up for us.
